About 12 miles south of Batesville, MS is Tocowa Springs (originally spelled with a silent “p” and pronounced tah’-kuh-wah), flowing from the bluff where the hills of North Mississippi run out into the sprawling Delta.  Before they were forced from their lands east of the Mississippi, the Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes met for councils of war at this spring, situated on their territorial dividing line.  They named the clear running spring to which they attributed strong medicinal powers by combining words from each of their languages to mean “healing waters”….”Ptocowa”.
